President & CEO, Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)
August 24, 2011
Intellirights thoroughly appreciates the opportunity to discuss innovation with Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association. Shapiro shared with us his vision for American prosperity and key points of his best-selling book The Comeback: How Innovation Will Restore the American Dream.
In the interview, Shapiro said that we Americans “have failed as a generation” by leaving our children in an economic situation worse than that we inherited. He went on to reject the notion that fixing our current economic woes is merely a choice between raising taxes on the rich and cutting entitlements. He stated:
The truth is we need a very complex, shared sacrifice of all Americans, and we need to focus on a strategy. And that strategy, in my view, is shared sacrifice and focus on our strategic strength, which is definitely going to be innovation.
Shapiro also went on to note some concerns that CEA has with S.968, or the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA). While this bill targets rogue websites dedicated to the sale of infringing or counterfeit goods, Shapiro is concerned that it lacks adequate due process protections and allows websites to be shut down without any confirmation of wrongdoing.
Shapiro called for an end to political gamesmanship and partisan politics and asked Americans to take a stand and work together for a better future. We thank Gary Shapiro for his time and insight on these important issues. He is indeed an IP visionary.
